Because Italy, of course! My parents were meeting my family (me, my husband, and our two small children) in Europe after a business trip, and since they don't make it overseas very often, we needed somewhere epic. Also, we found good deals on flights to Milan! So, Italy was a no-brainer. We decided to rent a car, and therefore decided we just wanted to stay in the Northern part of Italy, to avoid long car trips with two kids.
I was an architecture student before and as an architecture student, it is my dream to explore and see in person iconic buildings and structures such as the Colosseum, the Vatican City and the amazing cathedrals and churches in Italy.
This was a special celebration for my father-in-law's 80th birthday, to see his ancestral village of Itri with three generations of our family!
I wanted to go to Italy for the music, food, art and history! I ended up not getting to dive into the music part because in 2021 Covid restrictions were still very prevalent.

We ended up skipping most of the boot because there was a really easy overnight ferry from Naples to Palermo. So off to Sicily we went!

I desperately wanted to eat pasta and drink wine in Italy as well as visit the popular historical sites.

As a history nerd, and a former student of Latin at my Catholic middle school, I had long dreamed of seeing ancient Roman ruins and the cobblestone streets of "the eternal city". So, when I was leaving Spain to go to Egypt and points east, there was no way I could fly over Italy without taking at least a few days to see the major sites in Rome.
Honestly, it wasn't originally on our list. We were going from Italy to Portugal and the cheapest flight happened to be out of Milan.
After living in a city abroad, I felt like I needed a dose of mountain. My friend from my summer job in Colorado was visiting me in Spain and going to Italy after, so we decided to hop over to France in between to do what we love to do best together-- hiking.

I studied abroad in Rome and had a two week fall break from my school. I decided to take the train to Milan which was a little over three hours. My friend and I woke up super early and had made an itinerary from Friday morning to Monday afternoon.
