Weekend in San Diego

Weekend in San Diego

Map of trip
Posted on June 5, 2026

My boyfriend and I both live in New York, and if anyone's familiar with how NYC's winter was this year -- it was bad! SO we decided to take a 30 hour trip to San Diego to get some sunshine before returning to work on Monday.

Trip Recap

  • Day 1: The perfect day in San Diego: Starting the morning off by taking the ferry to Coronado Island, renting a bike and riding around the island, then ending the night with a coastal walk in La Jolla and dinner at San Diego's iconic Marine Room.

Highlights

The Marine Room was truly spectacular - the lobster was some of the best we've ever had.

Coronado Island is the perfect place to spend a few hours, I don't think you need all day here, but it's a great area to walk around in!

Day 1

We took the last flight out after work Friday, landed around midnight, and honestly did nothing due to the jetlag it was already 3am east coast time and we had a full day ahead of us Saturday.

We started the morning at Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego where there are food trucks set up on weekends, grabbed something quick, then hopped on the ferry to Coronado Island. $18 per person gets you a round trip ticket and the ride alone is worth it - we saw seals in the water on the way over, which was super cool.

Once you dock, there's a charming stretch right by the ferry landing with shops, stores, and restaurants worth wandering through. Our first stop was the Coronado Tasting Room where we did their wicked wine flight - I highly recommend. From there we headed to Peohe's Bar for actual food - tacos, a burger, and a gin and tonic that made my boyfriend very happy. We do love a good drink!

After that we rented bikes and rode down to Coronado Beach - PSA you actually can't swim in the water here due to all the bacteria, but that doesn't seem to stop people. It's still a very beautiful beach and good area to hangout. On the way we passed the Wizard of Oz House at 1101 Star Park Circle, which is this private historic cottage where L. Frank Baum rented in the early 1900s and literally wrote several Oz sequels. It's a private residence so you can only see it from the sidewalk, but the witch-themed exterior is so charming and worth a stop.

We hung out on the beach, went back to Peohe's for another drink because obviously, then grabbed a quick bite at Lil Piggy's Bar-B-Q before heading back to the hotel to get ready. The BBQ wasn't our favorite, but we tried it. That night we drove up to La Jolla for dinner at The Marine Room and if you ever go to San Diego this needs to be on your list. Waves crash against the walls of the restaurant while you're eating, the whole vibe is insane, and we even watched a proposal happen. Perfect end to the day.

Anything you would add or do differently?

  • If I rented a car I would do the Coastal Walk in La Jolla to see the seals before dinner, or visit the Sunset Cliffs. Hard to do without a car though in one day!

  • It's important to know that you can't really swim in the water in Coronado due to the bacteria (it gets hot and I thought I could swim so PSA)
