Trip Recap

- Day 4: Exploring Teufelsberg's history and art capped off our unforgettable last day!
Highlights
The ART
- This city has a vibe! And its alternative and welcoming spirit is expressed so well through its street art, or free art museums. There is a place for everyone here in Berlin.
Walks
- Such a quaint yet vibrant city to walk in. Although the architecture is beautiful, and you can feel like you are surrounded by concrete, there are so many parks or walks just outside the city to find some peace.
History
- You don't need to be a history buff to understand the wealth of history Berlin has to offer. But it is presented so beautifully that there is little chance for this richness of knowledge to bore you or turn you off wanting more.
Teufelsberg
- Do not miss this spectacular corner of Berlin's history. Once again, there is so much to learn here but if you are not into the history or you are bored of reading about the 20th century, you will not be disappointed by the street art and the views that Teufelsberg has to offer.
The people
- The people are relaxed here in Berlin. For a city that draws in a crowd, they do not seem bothered by the tourists at all - they embrace it and welcome all!
Days 1 to 2
Day 1
After arriving to our Airbnb we felt like taking a walk and finding a nice place to eat. We had some Thai food close to our place that was brilliant and relatively cheap.
Schlossgarten Charlottenburg was really close by so we thought we would tick it off our list and enjoy walking off dinner. Europe in May and beyond is a perfect time to enjoy the sunshine late into the day. We felt so safe strolling around the city, the architecture was beautiful and the locals were out in the parks playing Bocci with eachother.
Another Moment to be truly grateful for!
Day 2
Berlin has an abundance of things to see and visit and we jumped on the chance to enter some free museums and spend our day immersed in history and art.
A MUST DO is the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Incredible and touching stories combined with history all presented so beautifully and artfully. We followed this up with a trip to the Konig Galerie which was another artsy and alternative vibe.
There are multiple buildings you will pass by just walking around Berlin such as Emmauskirche, and we even managed to find a couple of cute book stores to pop our head into.
For lunch we stopped at Markthalle Neun which is the perfect place to find if you aren't sure what to eat. The market is crammed with food trucks and vans selling pasta's, pizza's, traditional food, pastries, ice cream - literally all the things you could dream of eating if you're hungry - and it's all made fresh on site. We couldn't decide so we indulged in both a tuna and salad pizza and a red sauce pasta, and finished with a desert. All were mouth watering!
The last museum we walked through was called Urban Nation, another really funky and artsy museum that you don't need to expend too much energy in. Then found the coolest street art in Europe down Dead Chicken Alley. If there's any of these places that are a must you MUST find Dead Chicken Alley.
Kristian so happened to be in Berlin at the same time so we met up in Dead Chicken Alley, and then trecked to the Berlin Wall and enjoyed all the beautiful art tattooed on the wall. Of course, we took a photo in front of the famous kissing wall.
There was a relatively cheap burger joint near Uber Platz so we finished a very long day enjoying a good burger that took a little too long to make, and Kristian abandoned us to meet up with a Tinder date, so we hit the road and enjoyed a nights rest.
Day 3
With so much to do in Berlin, I think we got overwhelmed and had a bit of a nothing day. A slower day.
We spent the morning in the Tiergarten having a wonderful walk and explore, before finding a nice traditional German restaurant for an early lunch... yes we skipped breakfast to save money.
On our way into town to meet up with Kristian we thought it was best to jump off the tram early and see some of Berlin's famous buildings - Zeughaus, Berlin Cathedral, Humboldt Forum.
Kristian was enjoying a beer with his lunch, and kindly bought me a beer to join him. We then took off to see some of the other sights of Berlin.
Checkpoint Charlie was a particularly interesting spot to see. So much history, and so many stories hidden in this quaint spot in the middle of the city. And, we checked out Victory Column too.
Kristian had an early flight the next morning, so we parted ways and Skye and I found a nice Poke Bowl place for dinner - another non-traditional meal - and it wasn't near as good as what we experienced in Prague.
Day 4
Our last day we were faced with a challenge on what to do. We had seen the sights we wanted to see, we had explored the free museums we were interested in, and the only other thing to do that we were interested in was not easy to get to.
To add on top of this, we had to change accommodation for our last night too.
We left our first accommodation at 11am - classic Skye and Finn leaving it up till the last minute we could possibly stay till. It took us just under two hours to find our accommodation and store our bags there - we couldn't check in yet. But our new accommodation (Alt-Hohenschonhausen) was super funky, so we were looking forward to spending our last night here.
Not being allowed to check in forced us to go and do something with our day, so we decided to go to Teufelsberg - the German telecommunication spy quarters of the cold war that they have turned into a museum and street art exhibition.
It took us a few buses to arrive to the area, and then it is a bit of a hike up the hilly region to find the towers. I'm sure there is tour buses that can take you right up to the top without the hike, but after sitting down and not doing much all day we felt as if we needed the exercise... and we're cheap.
Teufelsberg is a must do!
It combines the history of the cold war and why these telecommunication towers came into existence with mouth dropping street art. And, the cherry on top is the view from the top of the tower.
The way they have designed the towers you get the feeling like you shouldn't be up there. You feel like a bit of a rebel. And, although it may not always be like this, it was relatively quiet there so the art work and the views hit even deeper without the crowds of people around you. You do not feel like you need to rush there.
A big day of walking and being on our feet was gracefully finished at our accommodation. The private rooms they offer there are spacious and colourful and super alternative so it is such a nice vibe to be around. It attracts other travellers there who are super chill to hang out with too. We wished we found this accommodation earlier and stayed here the whole time!

Anything you would add or do differently?
-
Found our last accommodation earlier and spent our time there instead of the first Airbnb we were in.
-
Looked for cheaper more traditional foods instead of eating cheaply across different cuisines.
