Embrach
I flew in from Marrakech, and the flight into Zurich goes right over the Alps. Miles of snowy peaks under the wing, and I had my face pressed to the window the whole way down, not a bad welcome at all! I was working remote the next week and there isn't a better place I could see myself clocking in.
My friend picked me up at Zurich Airport and we drove about 20 minutes north to Embrach, a little village in the Zurich wine country with farms right up against the houses. Cows in the backyard, cats strolling the empty lanes and straight up postcard views. I stayed here last time I went to Switzerland a couple years ago, so this felt like I was back home.
On day one we walked straight up the hill behind the village. From the top you can see all of Embrach below you, red roofs and fields everywhere, and I got a clear blue sky in February, which I was not expecting at all. Usually its pretty grey around Zurich's neighboring villages but I was lucky to get some nice weather.
On the way down we passed a farm where the cows were hanging out under a shelter by the path. Two of them came right up to the bars to check us out. It was so cool that they were so friendly and almost like oversized puppies. They wanted to get pet and loved. On the farm you can pick up fresh eggs and fresh squeezed juices. Instead of paying a person you honestly leave the amount of money for the items you're buying, so don't expect change.
Then the supermarkets, which in Switzerland is basically a tourist attraction. The chocolate aisle goes floor to ceiling. Buy your chocolate there, not at the airport or the souvenir shops - it's the same chocolate for way less, and you're going to want to bring a lot home. We did a lot of groceries since my friends roommate is a chef and we like to save our dollars where we can.
Coming straight from Marrakech, the cold hit different. Bring a real coat, not the cute one. Swiss February does not care about your outfit.
