Lisbon
Landed in Lisbon to a soaking wet city and blue skies, which is basically Lisbon in January in one picture. I decided to stay at a hostel (Yes! Lisbon Hostel) my first two days there so I could meet some people and be social. I threw my bags down after checking in and went straight to the water with two hostel buddies I met.
Praça do Comércio is the big yellow square right on the river and you walk into it through the Arco da Rua Augusta, the giant arch at the end of the shopping street. You can't miss the center where the LISBOA letters sit out in the middle, and of course I did the photo. Was hard to capture a solo shot since so many people wanted one.
For lunch we wandered into the nearest restaurant and got a francesinha with an egg on top and a bowl of soup, aka a meal that makes you need a nap you are NOT going to get. After that we walked to Baixa and Chiado, here is where you'll see sardine souvenirs on every shelf and even a Havaianas store if you forgot your flip-flops!
The Elevador de Santa Justa is the iron elevator stuck in the middle of the city and was closed midday. You don't need to ride it to get the view though, you can walk up the hill behind it and get the top floor viewpoint.
I got back to the hostel and changed for dinner which is when I met a bunch of gals who convinced me to go out with them. We went to La Vita è Bella on Rua da Prata, which was on a covered terrace under heaters. I ordered the carbonara with a raw yolk sitting on top and wine bottles for the table. On the walk after, the castle was lit up pink over the rooftops and someone had written "YANKEES GO HOME" on a wall (noted, still came). Then I went off to Bairro Alto by myself, the bar street every hostel sends you to, picked the one blasting Spanish music (the bartender was dancing ON the bar) and stayed until 2:30 in the morning.
