Mexico City
I flew into Mexico City from Argentina in early November. Unfortunately I missed Dia de Los Muertos which takes place on October 31st, but if you can fly in earlier to experience this wonderful cultural event you should. Once I landed I saw lingering decorations from the holiday which made me excited, but longing to have had that experience.
First thing I noticed on the drive to my Airbnb was all the pink and white taxis everywhere. Then the apartment buildings, they were colorful and blocky with balconies stacked like Lego in orange and yellow. It seemed like Mexico City is much more colorful and lush than I had expected.
My Airbnb was in Condesa and it was super cute and kinda niche. It was also up a bunch of flights of stairs, which I found out carrying all my luggage up them after a night on a plane. There were plants and vines wrapped all along the building and streets. I headed up to the rooftop and sunbathed while soaking in the views.
My friend met me later in the day and we spent the afternoon unpacking and exploring the neighborhood. The first day in a new country is always weird. The money's new and you're kinda lost about where to go. Condesa and Mexico City in general are filled with many native English speakers so you can talk to anyone if you need help figuring out what to do.
In the evening we walked over to La Bodeguita del Medio in Roma Norte. It's a Cuban bar with a yellow sign and a Cuban flag over the door. I was very into the live music that was being played in the restaurant, so much so I forgot to take a photo of my food! Roma Norte at night is so good for walking and sight seeing. Old houses turned into restaurants and little bars on every corner, and I walked home under the city palms feeling like I'd picked the right last stop. After filling my tummy with some good food, I headed towards home.
