Weekend Getaway in New Buffalo, Michigan
We traveled to the New Buffalo area as it is a quick trip from the Chicagoland area, and found the perfect rental tucked away near Lake Michigan. There was no shortage of amazing restaurants, curated shops & markets, and activities to keep the whole family happy. The mix of beach time, great food, creative activities, and cozy local spots made the trip feel full but never overwhelming.

Trip Recap
- Day 1: New Buffalo offers a cozy family getaway filled with memorable experiences.
- Day 2: David’s Delicatessen and Farmette were delightful highlights of our morning.
Highlights
The highlight was the Sunset of Pokagon, the rental where we stayed. Even though we filled our time exploring the towns around Michiana (New Buffalo, Sawyer, Union Pier), we could have been just as happy walking along the wide roads in the forest and taking long walks on the beach.
Day 1
We stayed for just two days in New Buffalo and Michiana as a family of four. There’s something about this corner of southwest Michigan that instantly slows you down while still giving you plenty to explore. Cozy, charming, and quietly cool, it’s the kind of getaway that feels both restful and memorable.
For this getaway, we stayed at Sunset on Pokagon, a thoughtfully designed Airbnb in Michiana that managed to feel luxurious, cozy, and genuinely family-friendly all at once. The home has a modern, upscale aesthetic while at the same time warm, inviting, and designed for real life. Spacious common areas made it easy to unwind, and spend quality time together, while the bedrooms felt like calm, comfortable retreats. Large windows brought in beautiful natural light, and the multiple decks extended the living space outdoors. Evenings were spent soaking in the hot tub, gathering around the fire pit. It’s the kind of place where kids can spread out, adults can truly relax, and everyone feels a little spoiled.
We kicked off our first morning with a stop at Whistle Stop Grocery, a local gem that feels like part market, part community hub. It’s the perfect place to grab snacks, drinks, or anything you might need for a beach day or a relaxed night in. From there, we headed to Black Currant Bakehouse, which absolutely lived up to the hype. The pastries were beautifully made, the flavors thoughtful and not overly sweet, and the space itself was warm and inviting. It’s one of those places where you want to linger just a bit longer than planned.
Late morning led us to Grand Beach, and it was easily one of the highlights of the trip. The shoreline is stunning, with soft sand, peaceful views of Lake Michigan, and a calmer, more residential feel than some of the busier beach towns.
After a beach morning, lunch at The Stray Dog was exactly what we were looking for. Lively, casual, and full of energy, it’s a New Buffalo staple for a reason. The menu has something for everyone!
In the afternoon, we headed to Elsie Earl Studios to paint ceramics. This was such a fun and unexpected part of the trip, relaxed, hands-on, and a great way to slow things down while still doing something memorable. Great price and she was amazing with small kids.
Dinner that night took us to Beer Church Brewing, and it was a standout. The space itself is incredible, it’s set in a restored church with soaring ceilings. The beer selection was solid, the food comforting and well done, and the overall vibe struck a perfect balance between fun and laid-back.
Day 2
On day two, we started went to breakfast at David’s Delicatessen, a classic spot that delivers exactly what you want in the morning: great coffee, satisfying breakfast options, and friendly service that makes you feel like a regular even if it’s your first visit.
Before heading out, we made time for Farmette, a charming coffee and curated market. It was beautiful walking the ground. It’s the kind of place that reflects the heart of the area. It’s intentional, creative, and quietly impressive.
